Disney Announces Cast for New Lion King Movie

Disney announced the cast of the new Lion King movie last Wednesday, November 1. The movie is scheduled to release the summer of 2019.

The mentioned cast includes Beyonce who will voice Nala which has sparked lots of reactions from her fans and critics. Beyonce also posted the same picture Disney did on her Facebook  shortly after they released the cast on a Facebook post.

Among the new cast Disney casted James Earl Jones to voice Mufasa as he also did in the original movie. Keeping one original cast member, Disney casted a diverse team for this movie.

In the original Lion King released in 1994, white actors dominated the cast. Now about 23 years later, they have a cast that is a majority of black actors and actresses. Many fans have noticed this and are appreciative of the diversity in the upcoming film.

Many contradicting twitter reactions were posted on the replies to Disney's twitter post. Many of the replies included the same gif that showed their reactions to the fact that Beyonce was casted.

Disney's Facebook post raked in 106 thousand likes, more than 40 thousand shares and 12 thousand comments. Many of the comments criticized Disney for remaking so many of their classic movies. Fans of the original Lion King are worried that Disney will ruin the fandom for them with this remake.

Also in the comments people spoke about how Beyonce does not deserve this role. Many people believe she will not be a good fit for it.

"I don't feel like she will respect the role," Dorothy Brostrand, a Lion King fan said. "I don't feel like she did anything to get it. Napa deserves someone whose passionate about Disney AND her heritage."

Brostrand's post received over 300 responses and 280 likes, making it one of the most popular comments.

Beyonce's Facebook page, with more than 60 million followers had the most response on her post with the casting announcement. Her post reached more than 930 thousand likes, 300 thousand shares and 145 thousand comments so far.

"Adding Beyonce just ruins the project," Brian Fazio, a critic of Beyonce said. "Just like adding Will Smith to Aladdin. Beyonce and Will Smith obnoxious actors/singers who have over-inflated views of how wonderful they are."

Fazio's comment on Beyonce's page received more than one thousand likes being the most popular reaction on the post.

It seems like there is much controversy over how Beyonce will be voicing Nala due to her high amount of fame. Although she is highly praised by her fans it turns out many people are critical of her especially when she starts getting roles in movies.

Many fans have mentioned how Beyonce is a singer and the Lion King is a musical so it is appropriate for her to get the part. However, others believe the part should go to someone else.

"It is a director's dream to assemble a talented team like this," Director Jon Favreau said in regards to the new cast. "To bring this classic story to life."

Favreau talked about the new Lion King on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He discussed how he teased fans with the movie at the Disney D23 Expo earlier this year.

Although reactions are divided in regards the cast, the new movie is expected to have many viewers due to all the publicity it is getting with such a big named cast. Fans and critics will be waiting to see what Disney will do with the remake of the new Lion King in 2019.
